Beauty of

the Week

Beauty of the Week is a series of works created during the 2023 Leeway Foundation x Fleisher Art Memorial Artist in Residence that debuted at Our House Culture Center in January 2024. Beauty of the Week is an embodied rememory of my childhood and familial archives, intertwining my personal aesthetic memory with the collective Black American visual language often found in cultural memorabilia like Jet. The mini magazine affectionately known as the “Negro Bible,” has long remained a staple in the homes of grandmas, aunties, and mamas like mine. In this work, its periodic depictions of Black American culture and beauty act as a signifier, honoring our familial interiors as oases for collective and individual remembrance. This exhibition assembles ceramics, cyanotypes, painting and video inspired by Black vernacular interiors and intimacy, exploring the ways cultural ephemera influences our collective visual recollections. Utilizing cyanotypes, a 170 year old photographic process that uses the sun’s UV rays to reproduce personal and collective imagery that develops into my grandmother’s favorite shade of blue, I hope to visually honor my family: the things they collect, cherish, and have passed on to me. Beauty of the Week is an ode to my earliest creative inspirations and  favorite childhood pastime: reading magazines at my grandmother’s kitchen table, sipping someone’s coffee, envisioning what life might be like when I was grown enough to maybe be a Beauty of the Week.
